Gates Foundation readies a round of tempting biotech investments

After seeding a host of research efforts with billions of dollars in grant money contributed by the software mogul, the foundation opted for an equity stake in place of one of its usual contributions. Uganda: 'Truvada is not HIV vaccine'

Scientists in Uganda have dismissed reports that an HIV vaccine has been found. The reports follow the US-based Food and Drug Administration's approval of the antiretroviral drug Truvada as a preventive measure against the transmission of HIV. Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu, director of the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe, says Truvada is not an HIV vaccine but an antiretroviral drug.

UCSF researchers identify a potential new HIV vaccine/therapy target

After being infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) in a laboratory study, rhesus macaques that had more of a certain type of immune cell in their gut than others had much lower levels of the virus in their blood, and for six months after infection were better able to control the virus.

HIV vaccine carries its own adjuvant into clinical trials

Following its "allowed to proceed" notice, the NIH-funded HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) has started enrollment of GeoVax's second-generation HIV vaccine. The trial will include 48 people at four sites in the US.

Newly discovered breast milk antibodies help neutralize HIV

Antibodies that help to stop the HIV virus have been found in breast milk. Researchers at Duke University Medical Center isolated the antibodies from immune cells called B cells in the breast milk of infected mothers in Malawi.

Study confirms early elevated HIV infection risk in some Step Study participants

A long-term follow-up analysis of participants in the Step Study, an international HIV-vaccine trial, has confirmed that certain subgroups of male study participants were at higher risk of becoming infected after receiving the experimental vaccine compared to those who received a placebo.
